The Source of True Power: Beyond the Activist Container

The Source of True Power: Beyond the Activist Container
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:26

The world feels heavy right now. We are witnessing a collision of systems—authoritarianism, nationalism, and the defense of supremacy—all vying for dominance. Many heavy hearts are responding to this darkness by putting their faith in human systems: in political strategy, legislation reform, in the power of numbers, and in a belief that trusting people with good hearts is the same as trusting God.

But for those of us who follow Jesus, who want to remain faithful, there is a Voice of Truth that cuts through this noise. I am listening and want to share what I hear.

The Exhaustion of the Good Human

In my work as a mental health therapist, I see what happens in people when they trust in human systems every day. I often see activists who are burning out, bombarded by relentless news of injustice, and crushed by a weight they were never meant to carry. They struggle with self-criticism and shame because they feel the world’s brokenness is somehow a reflection of their own lack of effort.

When they try to rest it doesn’t feel restorative because they have learned that resting means being "complicit.” So they bypass their body’s signaling about their capacity limits and eventually they shut down into a numbness. This gets interpreted as “not caring” and the inner critic is ruthless with them about it. The shame gets deeper and darker. Depression feeds on that.

This is what can happen if a person of faith tries to put the Spirit of God into a container called social activism. When we treat the light we are given as a mere ethical framework for living together in society, we trade a living Source for a human mirror.

We trade the Living Source for our strategies, our programs, our cleverness, our goodness. And the well runs dry. When we are connected with the Source, we know the Spring of Living Water never runs dry. We drink from a never-ending source. If we reach for a cracked cistern, we feel anxious: "Am I doing enough? Is this working? Do they see my goodness?" The chest tightens, our temples ache, we feel pressure in our eyes. We are trying to be the power itself, and our body knows the truth before we can even say it.

Apart From Me

Jesus didn’t offer us a better political strategy to save democracy or a lovely sentiment about being decent neighbors. He told us about the source of true life being nourished by Him:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

A good human is still just a branch. And a branch, no matter how wise, how educated, well spoken, well read, socially aware, justice minded, or well-intentioned, cannot produce life on its own. When we try to fight the real world using the real world's tools—strategy, numbers, institutional organizing, policy—we remain trapped in the world’s exhaustion.

The Power of the Overcomer

I am reminded. Who is it that actually overcomes the real world? Is it the person with the best policy reform? It is the person who puts their faith in the One who has already overcome the world (1 John 5:4-5; 1 John 4:4).

I am reminded: The Kingdom of God is not a social project; it is a profound internal transformation (Ezekiel 36:26; Jeremiah 31:33). It is the Lord writing His law directly onto human hearts. This is why:

  • 50,000 social activists relying on their own energy and goodness cannot stand against one person truly empowered by the Holy Spirit.
  • Human systems rely on political force to change behavior; The Spirit relies on transforming who we are at the core.

Come Out and Be Separate

I am reminded: as the body of Christ we are called to be separate—not by isolating ourselves from the needs of the world, but by refusing to rely on the world’s power sources (Romans 12:2; 1 Peter 1:15-16).

If you are feeling crushed today, notice that weight in your body.

Does it feel like a burden only the Creator of the Universe can hold? If so, give yourself permission to stop being God and start being a branch again.

Don't cover His light or put it in a container of activism (Luke 8:16). Call the Light of the World by his proper name. He is the Source. Abide in the Vine. Let the pulse of his movements become the frequency beneath your feet.
